More than 3176 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.
They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”
Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mt Everest. Indeed, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Min Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”
His first found him within 190 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Three years later, Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma to finish what he had started.
Sherchan just 24 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.
However, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Chomolungma or Mount Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.
“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Mount Everest is shared by two countries. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on the Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. “the Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.
The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Everest. Now that Andrew Brash has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Chomolungma and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. This year European alpinist Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mount Everest after he reached the peak of Mont Blanc in France earlier this season.

All players, when they are concentrating on a stroke, are in some respects mad; for a second they become monomaniac; you are possessed with an idea that is fixed in your mind; your singleness of purpose is absolute if you really are concentrating. And I cannot imagine how anything can disturb them unless they allow it to. If this does happen, then, in my opinion, you cannot be giving your whole mind to the stroke, you aren’t concentrating.
When you are out on the course there are many minor distractions that you may encounter, from coughing or sneezing, all the way up to load and obnoxious crowds or players. But once a player gets into the habit of being put off their game by these little worries, you are unlikely to make any progress in the game, and you run the risk of wandering around the course looking for things at which to be annoyed, actually seeking them. Few golfers realize that their game cannot stand still, whether their handicap is scratch, eight, or eighteen; their standard of play must progress or retrogress, improve or deteriorate, according to the amount they play or practice.
In connection with this notion, a friend of mine suggests the obliteration from the mind of a bunker that is directly in the line of play. I might say (but I have not any intention of doing so) that my friend has chosen the wrong word. My argument is this: Was the player who landed in the bunker thinking of the bunker when he played his stroke, or was the golfer imagining that it was quite likely that the ball would land in the bunker?
By a law to which there are no exceptions, the will yields to the imagination. As an illustration of this, any one can walk along a plank a foot in width when it is lying on solid earth; but place that plank across the two trestles of a bridge, twenty feet up in the air, and not one person in twenty will walk calmly across it, because they imagine that they are likely to fall off! Undoubtedly this player in the aforementioned match actually imagined the ball hopping into the bunker, and that was the last conscious act before making the fatal stroke.
Can there be any other meaning to the word concentration, in a mental sense, than a focusing of the attention? And further, can you focus your attention on such a thing as a golf ball? I answer these questions with another question: Doesn’t the golfer focus his attention, not on the ball itself, but on some action connected with the ball? I grant you that you can concentrate on a golf ball, on the size of it, on its marking, or on the dents you may have made in it, but no player wishes to do this in the middle of a close match. So that when a golfer is “concentrating on the ball,” he or she is in reality concentrating on the stroke they are about to make. The golfer is focusing their attention on the desire to put the ball as near the hole as possible; and can it be doubted that the average golfer starts concentrating on the second shot long before he or she reaches the ball? This appears to me to be a fatal policy. It is well enough for a golfer to plan the method of play for the whole of any particular hole when they are on the tee, and yet I do not think that even this is a good plan. You may hit your tee shot, “as per schedule,” only to find that your ball is reposing in an old divot mark and that it is thus quite impossible to use a the proper club for your second shot. So the whole of your concentration is wasted.
The ideal method of playing golf is not to use your mind until you have to. When you reach your ball, concentrate as hard as you can, for upon your powers of concentration your next stroke depends. I have said, in common with every other writer on the game that hesitation is fatal, but it seems to me desirable that I should now amplify that statement. “Those who hesitate are lost,” because they aren’t concentrating. If you concentrate hard enough you cannot hesitate, provided you are clear about what you are concentrating on.

Golf swing improvement can be elusive for most golfers. I have
read many articles and studies on the huge number of golfers
quitting the game every year. They are tired of putting in the
time, buying equipment, taking lessons, and purchasing every
golf training aid on the market only to see no golf swing
improvement.
You can’t fault a frustrated golfer who experiences the above
and quits. Life is too short to spend 5 hours on a golf course
and not enjoy it.
Let’s discuss why this happens!
First off, golf swing improvement should be approached from the
inside-out. That means starting with your body. If your body has
physical restrictions, you won’t ever be able to make a
repeatable golf swing with any power or accuracy. It’s a
physical impossibility.
You can try-and-try, but it won’t happen!
You body dictates your golfing ability. Like in any sport, raw
talent is hard to come by and is only for a small percent of the
athletic community.
Do you feel like you should be a better golfer? How many times
have you walked off the course in disgust…knowing you should
have played much better? This is a common occurrence and one
that can be fixed quickly.
The right approach to golf swing improvement is one that looks
at your current golf swing faults and the ‘physical’ reason
behind it. I see this all the time. A golfer takes a lesson; the
instructor tells the golfer what he needs to do; and the golfer
can’t do it!
What a frustrating situation!
For every swing fault, there is an underlying ‘physical’ reason
why it keeps happening.
Let me give you one of many examples to substantiate the above
statement.
You are a slicer. That means you come “over-the-top” with your
upper body. Do you want to know one of the many reasons why this
happens?
Here goes!
You have poor core strength and flexibility.
If your body cannot initiate the downswing with the lower body,
especially the hips rotating; it is because your core muscles
are sending a message to your brain saying, “we can’t do this,
so figure out another way (compensation) to get me back to the
ball.”
Now the upside to this scenario.
You work on your core rotational strength and flexibility. You
don’t hit more balls. You don’t add more swing thoughts to your
swing. You don’t do drills at the range til your hands are
bleeding. You just improve your core. That’s it!
The result?
You are able to initiate the downswing with your lower body,
create and retain stored energy in your core area, and you not
only stop your slice, but you add 30 yards to your drives!
That’s golf swing improvement the right way!
Again, this is just one example of a golf swing fault; and the
cause and solution to eliminating it forever.
Now golf is fun again!
So when you think of playing better golf; take a new approach to
your golf swing improvement.

The Boston Celtics return this year as division champs in the Atlantic Division with a record of 45-37. Uncharacteristically, GM Danny Ainge did not make any major moves during the off season. The rest of the division made upgrades and will be looking to dethrone the Celtics. The Nets Trio of Kidd, Jefferson and Carter has New Jersey ( Brooklyn) ready to challenge the Celtics. The Knicks brought in the gypsy of coaches, Larry Brown, and center Eddy Curry in what could be a playoff bound year for the Knicks. Allan Iverson and Chris Webber will try once again to get the 76ers to playoffs while the Raptors of Toronto will be rebuilding around Power Forward Chris Bosh.
New Jersey Nets
The Nets have arguably the best perimeter trio in the league with PG Jason Kidd (14.4ppg, 8.3apg, 7.4rpg), G Vince Carter (24.5ppg, 4.2apg, 5.2rpg) and F Richard Jefferson (22.2ppg, 4.0apg, 7.3rpg). C Nenad Krstic (10.0, 5.3rpg) responded well last season and should improve in his second year in the league. The addition of Marc Jackson (12.0, 5.0rpg) will bring some energy and toughness to the second team. After last season’s injuries and distractions with the talks of moving to Brooklyn, Head Coach Lawrence frank demonstrated the leadership skills to be in the NBA. Look for the Nets to win the Atlantic Division.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics return G-F Paul Pierce (21.6ppg, 6.6rpg, 4.2apg) and the supporting cast of youngsters that made the nucleus of the team that won the Atlantic Division last season. G Ricky Davis (16.0, 3.0apg) comes off the bench to give the second team an instant scoring burst. Boston is soft in the pivot with F-C Raef LaFrentz (11.1, 6.9rpg) looking for the 3 point shot and the disappointing play of C Mark Blount (9.4, 4.8rpg). Head Coach Doc Rivers has a youth movement that will be a team to contend with in the very near future.
New York Knicks
Isiah Thomas ignored Larry Brown’s contract with the Detroit Pistons and signed him to coach his team this season. Brown with have to first get on the same page with the self proclaimed point guard in the NBA, Stephon Marbury (21.7ppg, 8.1apg, 1.49spg). The Knicks did improve the team by bringing in F Quentin Richardson (14.9ppg, 6.1rpp, 226 3-pointers) to help with perimeter scoring. C/F Eddy Curry (16.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg) was brought in to give the Knicks a presence in the pivot. The Knicks did well in the draft with three first round draft picks: (Rd 1,#8) Channing Frye-ARI, (Rd 1,#21) Nate Robinson-WAS, (Rd 1,#30) David Lee-FLO. I personally watched Robinson and Frye play well in the development league over the summer here in Las Vegas and believe that they will give the Knicks valuable minutes off the bench. If Brown can create chemistry on this unstable roster, the Knicks have the talent to get to the playoffs.
Philadelphia 76ers
G Allen Iverson (30.7ppg, 7.9 pg, 2.4spg) is the toughest player to ever play in the NBA. Iverson played his best basketball as a professional last season and should benefit from playing a full season with F Chris Webber (19.5ppg, 9.1rpg, 4.7apg) G Andre Iguodala (9.0ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.68spg), F Kyle Korver (11.5ppg, 226 3-pointers) and C Samuel Dalembert (8.2ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.68bpg) will be the supporting cast that will help and complement the fast paced offense that the 76ers will run this season. F Lee Nailon (14.2ppg, 4.4rpg) will provide an inside scoring punch off the bench. The loss of G Willie Green will hurt the second team offensively. The 76ers are tapped out financially and will have a good season if they stay healthy. Any injuries to the starting five will make for a long season for new head coach Maurice Cheeks.
Toronto Raptors
F-C Chris Bosh (16.8ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.40bpg) is in the shadows of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade in the eyes of the fans. In Canada the Raptors are looking for Bosh to be the cornerstone of the franchise after shipping carter to the New Jersey Nets. The Raptors had two first round draft picks and went after front court players, (Rd 1,#7) Charlie Villanueva-CON, (Rd 1,#16) Joey Graham-OSU, to give the franchise needed depth along the front line and will contribute immediately. G-F Jalen Rose (18.5ppg, 3.4rpg) will have to pick up the perimeter scoring void left with the departure of Carter. G Mike James (11.8ppg, 3.6 apg) will supply good on the ball defense and a solid three point shot. F Morris Peterson (12.5ppg, 4.1rpg) should fill in nicely for the departed Donyell Marshall. Toronto is in a rebuild year but they have a nice mixture of experience and new talent that can make will progress.

What an october, our team played like it was unstoppable
(atleast outside the division) finishing with a 8-2-0-2 record.
Good goaltending, even better defence and in the end, Bertuzzis
first game in Denver. Everyone in the Pepsi arena booing,
dressed up in prison jumpers with no 44 on it, others wore fake
neck braces and on top of that the constant heckle. But with
that game over and done, we hoped to see the Bertuzzi we grown
to love.
November is looking like a so so month with a record of 7-0-7-0.
Pay notice to the fact that of our 9 losses, 7 have been against
our own division, many 4 point games lost and the most important
fact that we only are leading the division by 1 point.
So far the offence of our defenceman has been a great surprise
with Sami Salo being the most surprising one. Throw in Ed
Jovanovski and Mattias Ohlund and no other team can match our
top 3 defenceman in the league.
In the goal Alex Auld got off to a good start going undefeated
in his first 5 and Dan Cloutier looked like his form from 200304
was still there. But a few injuries lately has changed things
around and the question arise if Alex Auld is ready to take on a
bigger role of the club while Dan is out with injury. The result
so far is a ? at best.
The forward position is lead by the captain Nazzy that leads the
team in points with 30 in 25 games. Bertuzzi is second with an
average just under 1 points per game and after that is Henrik
Sedin with a strong start of the season. The Sedin line has been
the most improved one over last year and the twins with Carter
are starting to show some promise of what the future might hold.

Stan Lee, in my mind, has to be one of the all time most recognizable individuals in the “Comic Book Industry”. Most lovers of comic books have known his name all their collecting lives. For those of you who don’t know his name, I am sure you have heard of his creations. The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, and the very well known Spider-Man are all from the mind of Stan Lee. For the last forty years or more and as an employee of Marvel Comics, he has entertained us through the art of comic book imagination.
Well, by now you would think that an individual of this caliber would be taken seriously and treated with respect from his employers. Apparently not! In 2002 Stan Lee decided he had to file a lawsuit against the comic giant, Marvel. It appears the agreement between Lee and Marvel was that 10% of the income generated from TV and movies using Lee characters, was to be his. Seems Marvel didn’t see it that way. Typical of conglomerates, isn’t it? The boys in the suits seem to want to make all the rules. Stan at one time had even been a suit. Among other positions held at Marvel, Lee had even been president of the company for a while.
Years ago when Stan Lee had created most of his characters, he had done it through a write-for-hire agreement, so he doesn’t own the characters. Stan was then, just a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy, trying to put meat and potatoes on the table. But over the years, he was very instrumental in putting Marvel Comics on the map.
When the 10% deal was formally put together, apparently most individuals involved didn’t realize the windfall that comic book character movies would become. Now is that any reason to hold back Stan’s piece of the pie? I think not. Just corporate bigwigs trying to increase their lot in life. Now this is just my opinion so don’t rant back at me as being unfair.
As luck would have it, a federal judge agreed and ruled in favor of Lee. How much monetary compensation does this mean? Well to put it in perspective, the two Spider- Man movies thus far, have reaped on the order of 800 million dollars apiece, in world wide ticket sales. This settlement could mean tens of millions of dollars for Lee, but the battle is not over. Marvel, will quite probably appeal the verdict and the case may be tied up in the courts for years.
Now don’t go feeling too badly for Stan Lee. He is still pulling down a salary from Marvel on the order of a million dollars. Still not to shabby in my mind. And Lee has mixed feels because he has been loyal to Marvel for 60 years. To have his lifelong employer trying to, shall we say, stiff him, for being so loyal, I’m sure, does hurt. Had it not been for Lee, Marvel may not have been in the financial position they are today.
At 82, Stan Lee does have a comfortable and successful life. And if even his settlement is held up in the courts for years, Stan won the first round. He didn’t bow down to the corporate hammer. Just another “Joe working class hero” yelling out, hey guys, let’s play by the rules.

Revamped for 2005, the Western Athletic Conference has added New Mexico State, Idaho, and Utah State. Even with these additions, the teams to beat are Fresno State and Boise State. The WAC has two automatic bowl bids and the rest of the WAC will be watching the bowl games. November 12, when Boise plays at Fresno State will determine the conference champion
2005 Predicted Order of Finish
1. FRESNO STATE
After closing out the 2004 with six consecutives victories, including a bowl victory over Virginia, the Bulldogs are sure that they can beat last season’s record. Part of the reason is that they have nine starters back for the offense, including senior quarterback Paul Pinegar. Also coming back will be their running back, Bryson Sumlin. There will very few holes to fill on the defense. They have returned almost the entire unit led by All-WAC defensive tackle Garret McIntryre.
2. BOISE STATE
With 17 starters returning, the Broncos plan to improve on their almost perfect record of 2004. With the exception of their loss in the Liberty Bowl, it would have been the dream season. The offensive is led by Daryn Colledge in the line and senior Jared Zabransky at quarterback. Besides having a passing attack, they can count their leading rusher Lee Marks. The only junior, linebacker Korey Hall will be the leader on defense.
3. NEW MEXICO STATE
Paul Dombrowski, quarterback and wide receiver, and leading rusher Muammar Ali will be the backbone of the offense. The defense has six returning starters including linebacker Jimmy Cottrell. Contrell has led the team in tackles for three consecutive years.
4. NEVADA
Wide receiver Nichiren Flowers will try to beat his 2004 record of 91 receptions along with quarterback Jeff Rowe will be the focal point of an explosive offense. The defense has linebacker Jeremy Engstrom and defensive lineman J.J. Milan returning along with six other members of the defensive unit. However, they will have to be better than in 2004 if they are going to be contenders.
5. LOUISIANA TECH
Freddie Franklin will start as the running back. However look out for freshman Patrick Jackson who rushed for more than 3,000 yards and 58 touchdowns during his senior year in high school. All three linebackers, including Bryon Santiago, have returned.
6. HAWAII
The Warriors will have a completely new offense with quarterback Timmy Chang taking over at quarterback. Michigan transferee Kainoa Akina will be handling the center duties on the offensive line. Three members of the defensive secondary will provide a stable influence.
7. IDAHO
The Vandals have an experience team on both sides of the ball. Running backs Jayson Bird (859 yards0 and Rolly Lumbala (614 yards) along with quarterback Michael Harrington return for the offense. A good group of linebackers, led by Cole Snyder (136 tackles last season) is the core of the defense. There a total of eight defensive returning starters.
8. SAN JOSE STATE
For a team that went 2-9 last year, it will be a tough conference. There is one excellent receiver, Rufus Skillern, on the team. There is only one quarterback (Adam Tafralis) on the team with any experience. Safety Josh Powell anchors the defense. In short, the Spartans are going to struggle.
9. UTAH STATE
Utah State needs a quarterback to go along with Chris Forbes, who led the team in rushing last season (396 yards, 3.7 yards per carry). Wide receivers Tony Pennyman and Kevin Robinson are solid. It is going to be hard for Utah State to improve on their 3-8 record from 2004.

A golfer elbow injury has got to be one of the most dreaded injuries on any golf course.
And it is not too difficult to figure out why. To begin with a ‘golfer’ elbow injury will usually take a long time to heal properly and quite often recurs shortly after a golfer gets back to the course. Golfer elbow injury is very similar to tennis elbow, which tennis players equally dread.
It is the sort of injury where a doctor will prescribe total rest well away from the course. For many a keen golfer, this may be even more punishment than the nagging, and often sharp pain from the ‘golfer’ elbow injury.
The reason why a golfer elbow injury takes so long to heal and in some cases may never really go away, is because it is the sort of injury that involves a joint. Usually injuries on joints are troublesome.
One of the reasons is that it is difficult to rest a joint completely and one ends up using the muscles whenever they make any slight movement.
Therefore any advice or tips to help reduce the risk of ‘golfer’ elbow is extremely important to any golfer.
Stretch exercises designed for golf specific muscles or muscles that are used while playing golf can help a great deal in strengthening and conditioning the muscles involved.
By strengthening golf specific muscles a golfer ends up putting much less pressure on the tendons that join the muscles to the bones around the elbow area. This greatly reduces the risk of this injury in golfers.
Warm up exercises before getting into a round of golf and a warm down as well, at the end of your game, also help tremendously in reducing the risk of golfer elbow injury.
Warm ups ensure that the pressures involved in playing the game are not exerted on cold muscles, which usually dramatically increases the chances of all sorts of injury and not just the ‘golfer’ elbow.
