Stan Lee, Even the Comic Book Great Ones Have Problems

Filed under: Living With Sports — admin @ 10:47 am

Stan Lee, in my mind, has to be one of the all time most recognizable individuals in the “Comic Book Industry”. Most lovers of comic books have known his name all their collecting lives. For those of you who don’t know his name, I am sure you have heard of his creations. The X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, and the very well known Spider-Man are all from the mind of Stan Lee. For the last forty years or more and as an employee of Marvel Comics, he has entertained us through the art of comic book imagination.

Well, by now you would think that an individual of this caliber would be taken seriously and treated with respect from his employers. Apparently not! In 2002 Stan Lee decided he had to file a lawsuit against the comic giant, Marvel. It appears the agreement between Lee and Marvel was that 10% of the income generated from TV and movies using Lee characters, was to be his. Seems Marvel didn’t see it that way. Typical of conglomerates, isn’t it? The boys in the suits seem to want to make all the rules. Stan at one time had even been a suit. Among other positions held at Marvel, Lee had even been president of the company for a while.

Years ago when Stan Lee had created most of his characters, he had done it through a write-for-hire agreement, so he doesn’t own the characters. Stan was then, just a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy, trying to put meat and potatoes on the table. But over the years, he was very instrumental in putting Marvel Comics on the map.

When the 10% deal was formally put together, apparently most individuals involved didn’t realize the windfall that comic book character movies would become. Now is that any reason to hold back Stan’s piece of the pie? I think not. Just corporate bigwigs trying to increase their lot in life. Now this is just my opinion so don’t rant back at me as being unfair.

As luck would have it, a federal judge agreed and ruled in favor of Lee. How much monetary compensation does this mean? Well to put it in perspective, the two Spider- Man movies thus far, have reaped on the order of 800 million dollars apiece, in world wide ticket sales. This settlement could mean tens of millions of dollars for Lee, but the battle is not over. Marvel, will quite probably appeal the verdict and the case may be tied up in the courts for years.

Now don’t go feeling too badly for Stan Lee. He is still pulling down a salary from Marvel on the order of a million dollars. Still not to shabby in my mind. And Lee has mixed feels because he has been loyal to Marvel for 60 years. To have his lifelong employer trying to, shall we say, stiff him, for being so loyal, I’m sure, does hurt. Had it not been for Lee, Marvel may not have been in the financial position they are today.

At 82, Stan Lee does have a comfortable and successful life. And if even his settlement is held up in the courts for years, Stan won the first round. He didn’t bow down to the corporate hammer. Just another “Joe working class hero” yelling out, hey guys, let’s play by the rules.

About ADD ( Attention Deficit Disorder ), its Symptoms

Filed under: Medical Infos — admin @ 10:22 am

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a condition that is usually characterized by behavioral and learning disorders. ADD generally diagnosed in children, mostly affects the boys than the girls. ADD not only occurs in childhood but also continues till adulthood in some cases.

Some of the characteristics that are commonly cited among the children with ADD are hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity. ADD results in children finding it difficult to perform a task assigned to them and focus on some of the important aspects of conversations. In addition, the children are not able to complete their tasks as they rapidly move from one activity to another frequently or due to the distractions caused by external stimuli.

ADD is a neurobiologically-based developmental disability that usually affects children. The actual cause of ADD is unknown till date. Research has shown that ADD is caused due to the genetic transmission of the condition from the parents to the children and also can be due to the result of a chemical imbalance or deficiency of certain neurotransmitters.

The neurotransmitters are chemicals that help the brain regulate the behavior of an individual. A recent study has shown that the rate at which the brain uses glucose, its main energy source, is lower in individuals suffering from ADD than in individuals without ADD.

The important features associated with ADD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Some of the symptoms due to inattention include making careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities, facing difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, not listening when spoken to directly, facing difficulty in organizing tasks and activities, and mostly forgetful in daily activities.

Some of the symptoms due to hyperactivity include fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat, running about or climbing excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate, facing difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly, and talking excessively. Some of the symptoms due to impulsivity include blurting out answers before questions have been completed, facing difficulty in awaiting their turn, and interrupting in a conversation.

Stress Relief Advice And Tips For Free

Filed under: Guidance — admin @ 8:26 am

This article gives free tips and advice about how to reduce
stress. I am a person who used to stress in a big way. At one
point a work colleague made a comment that he thought that I
walked around with the weight of the world’s problems on my
shoulders. My hair started to turn grey when I was only
twenty-one years of age. Things though had to and were about to
change.

I realised that the way I was living my life was not only
probably unhealthy but was also a very unhappy one. By the age
of twenty-two I decided to attempt to change the way I lived my
life. I believed that I needed a change of attitude, I was
somebody who was extremely negative and the first thing I worked
on was trying to become a far more positive thinker.

I then went about reading lots of books about mind over matter
and positive thinking. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed
reading this material and the lessons I learnt were to change my
life forever, in a good way.

The first thing I learnt, which seems so obvious now, is that
worrying and stressing about a situation does not make it go
away or make it any easier. In fact it makes it a whole lot
worse. The important thing to remember is that in life all you
can do is try your best. When a negative thought or worry enters
your head you need to immediately ignore it and to change your
thought processes into thinking about something which makes you
happy or smile. You have to treat these demons as your worst
enemy and fight them away. Treat it like a war and be determined
not to let them win the battle of minds.

The next lesson I learnt was that a life spent constantly
stressing is a waste of a life. You never know when your time is
up and therefore you need to make every minute count. We only
know for a fact that we have one life, even though I do
personally believe in the after life, therefore we have to make
the most of that life. I now live every day like it is my last,
I live each one to the full.

The last piece of advice is to think about other people in the
world who are not as fortunate as yourself. I for example used
to feel very sorry for myself and believed that I was very
unlucky. When thinking about other people who live in the world,
I actually realised that I was actually one of the lucky ones.
People in for example parts of Africa and the third world would
probably laugh at me if I had described my worries to them.
